Google Ads vs. Local Services Ads for Pool Companies: Which Is Better?
Search for “pool service near me” and you will often see two kinds of paid results at the top of Google: regular search ads, and a box of local businesses with a verification badge. That box is Local Services Ads. Pool company owners regularly ask which one they should use. The short answer: in most cases, both, but for different reasons.
What Local Services Ads are
Local Services Ads (LSA) are Google’s pay-per-lead ads for local service businesses. They appear at the very top of many local searches, show your rating and review count, and display a Google verification badge once your business passes Google’s checks.
- You pay per lead, not per click. You are charged when a homeowner contacts you through the ad, for example by calling or messaging you.
- Google verifies your business first. Depending on your country and category, this can include background checks, licence and insurance checks. It can take a few weeks.
- Your reviews matter a lot. Rating, review count, responsiveness and proximity all influence how often you appear.
- Availability varies. LSA categories differ by country and region, so check whether pool cleaning or pool services are available where you operate.
What regular Google Search ads are
Search ads are the classic text ads shown above and below the organic results. You choose the searches you want to appear for, write your own ads, and send people to your own website or straight to a phone call.
- You pay per click. You are charged when someone clicks your ad, whether or not they become a lead.
- You control the details: which searches, which suburbs, which hours, how much to bid, and where people land.
- Results depend heavily on setup. Good structure, negative keywords and tracking make the difference between profitable and wasteful.
Side by side
- Pricing: LSA charges per lead; Search ads charge per click.
- Control: LSA offers very little control over targeting and wording; Search ads offer a lot.
- Setup time: LSA needs verification first; Search ads can go live within days.
- Trust signals: LSA shows a Google badge and your reviews; Search ads rely on your ad copy and landing page.
- Lead quality control: with LSA you can dispute some invalid leads; with Search ads you control quality through keywords and exclusions.

What each one costs
Search ads cost whatever each click costs in your market. For common pool searches in competitive US cities, top-of-page bids often range from about $9 to $30 per click (see how much a pool company should spend on Google Ads). Not every click becomes a lead, so your real cost per lead depends on how well your landing page converts.
Local Services Ads charge per lead, and the price per lead varies by country, city and service category. You can set a weekly budget, and Google shows an estimated cost per lead when you set up your profile. Because you only pay when someone contacts you, LSA can be easier to budget, but you have far less control over who sees your ad and when.
When Local Services Ads make sense
- You have a solid number of good reviews.
- You can answer calls quickly, because responsiveness affects how often you are shown.
- You want predictable pay-per-lead pricing without managing keywords.
When Search ads make sense
- You want to target specific services, such as weekly service or green-pool cleanups, separately.
- You want to control which suburbs and which hours your ads run.
- LSA is not available for your category or area, or you are still waiting for verification.
- You want to send people to a landing page that sells your service properly.
Getting started with Local Services Ads
The setup process is mostly paperwork, and the main thing to plan for is time. In broad terms:
- Check availability for your service category and area on Google’s Local Services Ads site.
- Create your profile with your business details, the services you offer and the areas you cover.
- Complete verification. Depending on your country and category, Google may ask for licence, insurance or background checks. This is often the slowest step.
- Set your weekly budget and hours, then connect your reviews.
- Go live and respond quickly to every lead, especially in the first weeks.
While verification is in progress, Search ads keep the phone ringing, which is why I usually run both from the start.
A quick note on tracking
Local Services Ads have their own lead dashboard, while Search ads are measured through conversion tracking on your website and calls. To compare them fairly, record where every new customer came from, even if it is just a column in a spreadsheet. After a couple of months, the numbers will tell you where your next dollar should go.
How to get more from Local Services Ads
- Collect reviews consistently. Ask every happy customer. Rating and review count strongly influence how often you appear.
- Answer fast. Missed calls and slow replies reduce your visibility over time.
- Set accurate hours and service areas, so you only receive leads you can actually take.
- Dispute invalid leads. If a lead is clearly not a real customer, such as a job seeker or a wrong service, you can ask Google for a credit.
Common mistakes with either option
- Running Search ads without negative keywords, so budget leaks to irrelevant searches.
- Relying on LSA alone and leaving specific, high-value searches to competitors.
- Not tracking calls from each channel, so it is impossible to tell which one brings customers.
- Turning everything off in the quiet season, instead of reducing spend and keeping your presence.
My usual recommendation for pool companies
For most pool companies, I recommend starting Search ads straight away, since they can go live quickly, while the Local Services Ads verification runs in parallel. Once both are active, compare the real cost per customer from each and shift budget towards whichever performs better in your market. They complement each other: LSA captures people who trust the badge and reviews, while Search ads capture specific service searches and give you the control to grow.
Whichever you use, track every call and form properly. Without tracking, you cannot tell which channel is actually bringing in customers.
